MARSH Ladies' Choir has just returned from a three day trip to Gloucestershire as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations.
But the trip wasn't just about celebrating their milestone year, it was about sharing their musical skills.
The choir gave a concert at Dursley Parish Church as part of the Dursley Arts Festival proving that Friday night remains music night!
AFTER a successful run at the recent Mrs Sunderland music Festival, Marsh Ladies are back on the concert trail.
The Ladies are delighted to have won two first prizes at the Sunderland, one for winning Ladies Choir and the other for first place in the Kirklees Choir: Section B for 44 voices and under.
The singers will also take part in a BBC TV recording of Songs Of Praise to be made at the end of March.
Others involved will include older members of Huddersfield Choral Society's junior choirs plus singers from Colne Valley Male Voice Choir and musicians from Sellers International Band.
THE choir celebrated its golden jubilee with this well-attended concert and it is hard to imagine that in the course of 50 years it has ever been in better voice.
On most of the criteria on which one might judge a choir, the Marsh Ladies, under the direction of Paul Iredale, showed that they are on top form as they begin their second half century.
It is no surprise that a well-trained all-woman choir should be able to sing with good intonation, attractive tone and rhythmic lightness. Less to be expected, perhaps, was the power of sound which the choir achieved, especially in fortissimo final chords which, with the exception of the very first number, kept immaculately in tune.
THEY started with rehearsals in people's lounges but proved themselves a group of singers with staying power. For 2005 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the start of Marsh Ladies Choir.
The year looks a busy one with concerts and events already in the diary. And you can be sure that at least some will include old friends. For the choir looks set to use its anniversary year to celebrate the past and look to the future.
Current chairman Pauline McNeil has held that job for four years though she has been a choir member for nearer 33 years. Paul Iredale is the conductor and John S Bailey, their accompanist.
